Dr. Thomas Bishara is an airway-focused dentist practicing in Morristown and Metuchen, NJ, with a special focus on oral appliance and combination therapy for sleep-disordered breathing. He helps adults and children who snore, grind, mouth-breathe, or wake up tired — including many who tried a CPAP and couldn’t live with it.
“My degree is in dental medicine — and I’ve always taken that word to heart. I see my job as noticing what others miss, and refusing to guess: measuring, verifying, and walking alongside each patient until they can truly rest again.”
Thomas Bishara, DMD, earned a B.S. in Biology from Rutgers College (1981) and his Doctor of Dental Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (1985), followed by a General Practice Residency at Kennedy Hospital.
He is known for a distinctive standard of care: verifying every appliance titration with objective, nightly SleepImage data rather than subjective guesswork, and co-managing patients in close coordination with their sleep physicians. His focus is the airway — the crossroads of how we breathe, sleep, and heal — and catching what others have missed for years.
That standard of care has an origin. Airway.Dental grew out of Dr. Bishara’s years inside the JFK sleep program in Edison, where he first saw how an oral appliance fits into sleep medicine — and where the physician-and-dentist co-management model the practice runs on was first modeled for him. It’s the reason he named his method the Verified Titration Protocol™, and the reason the practice measures everything and promises nothing it can’t show. Proof, not promises — that isn’t a slogan; it’s how he was taught to think.
My degree is in dental medicine — and I’ve always taken that word to heart. From the very beginning, I thought of myself as a physician who specialized in all things dental: responsible not just for teeth, but for the whole person those teeth belong to.
That calling took shape in 1985. During a rotation through the sleep department in my hospital residency, I was mentored by Dr. Sudhansu Chokroverty — a thought leader in sleep medicine — who encouraged my fascination with the airway and first introduced me to combination therapy. Something clicked that I’ve never been able to put down.
The mouth sits at the crossroads of how we breathe, how we sleep, and how we heal — and for too long, what happens there at night has gone unseen. Behind worn enamel and clenched jaws are people who are exhausted and foggy and quietly struggling, with no idea their airway is at the center of it.
There is nothing better in this work than watching someone step out of a monochrome, dulled daily struggle and back into a technicolor world. That transformation is why I do this. My mission is simple, and maybe a little ambitious: to bring airway awareness into every dental office — one smile at a time.
