What if your grinding isn’t a habit — but your body’s emergency response to a closing airway?

The short version

The airway–grinding link

Research links sleep bruxism (nighttime grinding and clenching) with disturbed breathing during sleep. One leading explanation: as the airway collapses, the brain briefly rouses and thrusts the lower jaw forward to reopen it. The grinding you (or your partner) notice may be the sound of your body defending its airway, over and over, all night.

Protect the teeth — and find the cause

If you grind, we absolutely want to protect your teeth. But stopping there can mean treating the smoke and ignoring the fire. Before assuming stress is the whole story, it’s worth a few nights with the home sleep ring to see whether your breathing is driving the grinding. If it is, treating the airway can calm the grinding, the headaches, and the jaw pain at their source.
